The Power of Asking for Help

Do you realize that for generations, Black women have been told that asking for help is a sign of weakness, and that we must carry everything on our own to prove our worth? This narrative—rooted in white supremacy— paints us as superhuman, or better yet inhuman, as if we are immune to exhaustion, stress, and the toll of life’s demands. It’s a dangerous myth, one that demands we sacrifice our well-being to uphold the illusion of invulnerability.
But let’s get real: Strength does not mean doing it all by yourself. Does it?
How to Start Asking for Help
1. Shift your mindset. Remind yourself that everyone—everyone—needs help sometimes. You are no exception, and that’s okay.
2. Start small. Ask a trusted friend or loved one for assistance with something specific. Begin to build your comfort with relying on others.
3. Seek professional support. Therapists, coaches, and community groups are here for you. They provide tools, guidance, and a safe space to share your load.
Your value isn’t connected to how much you can do alone.t
